The New Zealand national election will be held on September 23. The National Party came to power in 2008 under former prime minister John Key and will be seeking a fourth term under Mr English's leadership.The election date was announced on the same day that data showed the country's unemployment rate moved back over 5 per cent after a large number of people entered the workforce. The unemployment rate rose to 5.2 per cent in the three months ended December 31 from a revised 4.9 per cent in the September quarter, Statistics New Zealand said.Economists had been expecting the unemployment rate to ease back to 4.8 per cent. Employment grew 0.8 per cent in the quarter to 2.51 million while the working- age population grew 0.5 per cent to 3.76 million. The participation rate rose to an all-time high of 70.5 per cent.The December quarter saw a large number of people enter the labour force. But while the number of people in employment has risen, so has the number of unemployed people. (ICE SYDNEY)
