Latvia offers Kazakhstan to use its ports for delivery of goods to EuropeLatvia's new Minister of Transport Jānis Vitenbergs offered Latvian ports for Kazakh freight shipments to Europe at a meeting with Kazakh Minister of National Economy Alibek Kuantirov,  the Ministry of National Economy said."Latvia is ready to provide comprehensive assistance and its ports' infrastructure to Kazakhstan for freight delivery to the Scandinavian countries and Europe," according to the Ministry's press service.Kuantirov stressed the role of Latvia as one of Kazakhstan's key partners in the Baltic region."The current geopolitical situation has changed the geography and direction of supply chains. The redistribution of commodity flows led to high growth in foreign trade last year. In this context, the role of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR), designed to diversify the freight routes from Kazakhstan to Europe and ensure fast delivery of goods, is growing," he said.Vitenbergs noted that Latvia is interested in strengthening mutually beneficial cooperation with Kazakhstan.Trade between Kazakhstan and Latvia last year amounted to $216 million, an increase of 250% from 2021. Exports increased by 400% and amounted to $182 million. Imports grew by 40.7% and amounted to $161 million.There are three major seaports in Latvia - Riga, Ventspils and Liepaja.The cargo transshipment in the ports of Latvia in 2022 increased by 15.2% to 48.078 million tonnes after adjustments to the new geopolitical reality. Latvian ports with storage infrastructure for coal switched to coal shipments from new suppliers, in particular from Kazakhstan. (ICE ALMATY)
