Kazakhstan will finalize negotiations with Russia on gasification of north and east regions by end-2024 - Ministry of EnergyThe negotiations with Russia on the supply of domestic gas to the north and east of the republic are expected to be finalized before the end of this year, Kazakh Energy Minister Almasadam Satkaliyev told Interfax-Kazakhstan.Satkaliyev announced the expected completion date of the negotiations at a Wednesday briefing after the meeting of the Majilis, the lower chamber of the Kazakh parliament, when journalists asked him about the pending decision on the gasification of the north and east regions of Kazakhstan.The Kazakh authorities are mulling over a few options for domestic gas supplies to the north and east regions of Kazakhstan, including construction of the 2nd and 3rd stages of the Saryarka gas pipeline and construction of a gas pipeline from Russia to China through Kazakhstan to allow Kazakhstan to use Russia gas for the north and east regions. It is expected that the Russian-Chinese pipeline may go through Kostanay, Astana, Pavlodar, Semey and Ust-Kamenogorsk. The second option is now being discussed by QazaqGaz and Gazprom, and this project is going through a feasibility study at the moment.Satkaliyev said in June 2023 that the gasification of east Kazakhstan with domestic resources will not be possible until after 2027-2028, so Kazakhstan will have to import gas from Russia in the medium term, and the Russian gas won’t be cheap.In November 2023, Gazprom and Kazakhstan's government signed a strategic cooperation agreement. Its purpose is to develop cooperation in gas supply, transportation and processing, as well as exploration and production.Deputy Energy Minister Alibek Zhamauov said earlier that the Kazakh government would make a decision on the gasification of the north and east of the republic by the end of 2023.
